Kapiti College Students compete in the Secondary Schools Judo Championships in Tauranga. |
On Sunday 18th July the Kapiti Judo Club took away 7 secondary school students to the Secondary Schools Judo Championships in Tauranga. Judoka compete in weight divisions and first up was Matthew Whitton, competing on behalf of Kapiti College. Matthew’s first fight was tough and at the end of time (4 minutes) resulted in a tie so the bout went into Golden Score which is where the first player to score within a minute wins. Matthew got in first and won the match and although he lost two matches to the eventual gold and silver medallists he won a bronze medal in the U73 weight division. | |  Matthew, Peter, Richard and Rae Rae Cowell as the only girl competing on behalf of Kapiti College was disappointed to be unsuccessful in her efforts to win a medal but fought well against girls who went on to become the eventual medal winners in her weight division. | Fighting in the U66 weight division Richard Pengelly was unsuccessful in winning a medal but competed well in his pool matches. Peter Dacombe was in the U60kg division and although he did not win a medal he achieved a personal best winning a match against a brown belt who was four grades above him who eventually went on to win the bronze medal for that weight division. Peter’s initial win resulted in a three way tie for the semi-finals resulting in Peter ended up fighting an additional two extra matches. |
